I know he’s had some ferocious criticism from even his own supporters in recent seasons, but that’s somebody else’s opinion which they’re entitled to... mine is total respect for the guy.
He gets that respect for what he has achieved at Arsenal over a hell of a long period, but also for what he is still achieving right now.
They go to Spurs on Saturday for the North London Derby on the back of an impressive run, but, more importantly, on that result at Manchester City last month.
It was a huge win, and the most commendable thing about it was it probably goes against the grain for them to play that way – they got organised, got behind the ball and worked out something that worked.
They won’t fear Tottenham because of that result in Manchester, even though Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been performing impressively themselves.
That style Arsenal showed at Man City was not a one-off. It’s not the first time I’ve seen them do it.
They went to Bayern Munich last year and won 2-0, and it could have been more.
Classic North London derbies in pictures:
I also remember that, even though they got a few drubbings away from home last season despite them being top, they went to Chelsea back in 2011 and scored five.
Wenger has always been really good at getting their confidence high and getting them on long unbeaten runs, which means they won’t believe they are completely out of the title race.
They’re a bit behind, of course. They’ve got four clubs to jump over and that’s probably too big an ask for them to win the league, because it depends on too many other sides to have a poor run of form themselves.
But you know what, they have to believe they can do it, and start by concentrating on their own results.
What I like about Arsenal, is they always believe in themselves, even when they’ve had a few bad results, and that must come from the boss.
I’m not going to start telling their fans to lay off their manager, that’s their business... and it’s a tough business. Or a tough crowd.
